It's Coming

It's coming!  

Starting on Tuesday, Dec 1st, I will be posting out my end-of-the-year Calendar on this blog. It consists of a post a day until the end of the year.  Most of you have seen these before. 

This year I am recounting the tale of another strange trip I took through time and space.  I hope you will enjoy the ride!

I've done it! Retired from my day job!

Yesterday was my last day at my day job. 

I've officially retired from Blueport Commerce, and now will be an artist full-time!  Woo Hoo!

While at work, I had a habit of making origami cranes (at meetings, on the train, whenever...). 

 I would give every new employee a crane, and sometimes gave them all around at holidays.  

Well, the whole company got together and repaid me in kind!  

Everyone folded some units and Rory put them all together into an amazing Phizz Torus!

 Here I am at the presentation trying to wear it (silly idea)...

and here it is at home on the table.  

It's about 26 inches in diameter, and (according to the instructions Josh sent) it has 360 units!  

Lots of people decorated their units, or signed their names, or even gave me sage advice! 

(don't worry Tania, getting messy is my favorite thing!)

Thank you everyone at Blueport!  You guys are amazing.

and now my challenge is to use my days well, and continue to work and grow as an artist.

Busy show weekend!

On Friday the 16th, from 5-9 pm, I'm at the reception for Connections at the brand new Gallery Blink, at 1963 Mass. Ave in Lexington. 

A new kind of gallery, showing a wide range of work in a beautiful home setting, Blink will be open for 4 days only (October15, 16, 17 & 18) - but the work will be shown by appointment until October 31.

On Saturday the 17th, from 7-9 pm I'll be at the reception for New England Wax at Gallery 7, Gallery Seven, 7 Nason St., Maynard, MA.  This beautiful show of encaustic paintings and sculpture will be up until November 14th.

If you can't come to the receptions try to stop by and see the shows.

October News (Shows, Origami and Castles)

As you may have seen here in May, or maybe on my website, I've been  making buildings/castles using origami boxes.

For several years I have found myself doodling little city-castles like this one. 

So last winter I decided to build some.  I make origami boxes, while I'm in front of the TV, riding on the train, or sitting in meetings.  Here's a bunch.  As you can see I use maps, bits of magazines, newspapers, monotypes, and/or origami paper. 

Then I coat them all with a layer of encaustic wax medium and heat them with a heat gun so the medium soaks in....(see the dragon that wouldn't stay out of the picture?)

Then I start to attach them to a panel - this was my first step on my first one.  As you can see, I recycled an old panel for the background (do you see the little strip of one of my doodles in there?)

and this is how it ended up, with the background painted over.  

This one, Castle in the Orange Woods, and my most recently finished one, Tower of Babel, are both in the show Connections, October 15-18 at the unique Gallery Blink, 1953 Mass. Ave., Lexington, MA.  (Reception Friday, October 16, 5-9 PM).

 This is Babel, which was all folded out of texts in as many languages as I could easily find.

September Update

I've been very lax about posting here, so will try to update a bit. 

We took an amazing trip in July to the eastern Sierras.  I did my usual drawings and watercolors,  keeping myself humble.  Here are a few:

The last one, though small, reflects something else I have been working on.  Expressive Drawing.  Inspired by my fellow Depot Square Artist Elizabeth Carter, I have been doing some large, loose, free drawing.  Making a conscious choice to let myself work large and without a specific goal I have been having a lot of fun, and I think I am giving myself some new inspiration. Some will be glued to panels and worked further with encaustic, and others will be cannibalized into smaller finished pieces.
